SciPROOF is hard to write about at length because it does its work largely out of view – but it does that work efficiently and well. It goes beyond the normal remit to check a wide range of scientific terms, non-Roman characters including all those Greek symbols of which science is so fond, and style aspects. Multiple dictionaries are supported, and the addition of new terms goes beyond the usual ‘add to dictionary’ to embrace font format and placement of components within the term. In Word it installs a three button addition to the toolbar; in Access, Excel, FrontPage, Outlook and the rest, it operates as a near invisible extension to the native checker.

sciPROOF is just what the scientist ordered. Now, instead of having to add all those complex scientific terms to the Word dictionary, you just add sciPROOF to your Word and it takes care of all the scientific term corrections for you. Without sciPROOF, scanning for complex scientific terms with Word's existing dictionary usually requires a few months of adding terms to the dictionary, as you go, when preparing the various documents in a specialized scientific field. sciPROOF simplifies this process and thus saves users countless hours of time they no longer have to spend laboriously configuring their Word dictionary.
sciPROOF is tailor made for all medical professionals and scientists, especially those in laboratories and any of the many medical fields. The price of this amazing program is so realistic that sciPROOF belongs on the computers of all scientists who have to write narrative documents, as well as spell check all their email messages.
sciPROOF also belongs on the computers in all university libraries, especially those that set aside workstations for students to use to prepare reports.

Office 2003 checked out
Spring 2004, Issue 30
Spelling and grammar checkers. We can't live without them, right? But for those of us producing technical and scientific documents, whilst they might be useful, they can be hard work too. For every mistyped word they show up, there are half a dozen perfectly good ones highlighted too, simply because they might not be ones in your average office worker's everyday documents.
With sciPROOF, that all changes. This brilliant piece of software vastly expands the Microsoft Office spellchecker with a comprehensive database of over 250,000 scientific, medical and chemical terms - a database which can be constantly updated online too. The spell checker is compatible with Microsoft Word, Outlook, Outlook Express, Power Point, Front Page, Excel, Access and Microsoft Project … and that includes the new Microsoft Office 2003.
There's more: sciPROOF tackles style-checking too, with patent pending proofreading technology. You can now integrate and proofread required formats and styles, for example: italics (e.g. Genus species), sub- and super-scripts, acronyms and Greek symbols.
The difference is plain to see. With the standard Microsoft Word spellchecker, even an almost perfectly-written document can be a mass of red and green wavy lines. Using sciPROOF to check it, only the genuinely misspelt or mistyped words are highlighted. This is one piece of software which will start saving you time and money from the moment you install it on your PC.

sciPROOF... The scientific author's proofreading tool
Autum 2003, Issue 29
Ever thought to yourself that spellchecking and grammar-checking your technical document in Microsoft Word might be more effort than it's worth? If you've ever seen a page full of possible errors flagged, when you know there's nothing wrong with most of them, you'll know what we mean.
Enter sciPROOF. It has a whole series of tools for scientific and technical authors, including a spellchecker which integrates into Microsoft Word and adds over 250,000 entries from databases of scientific terms to the native spellchecker. You save time proofreading and you're able to focus on actual errors. The sciPROOF Style Checker proofreads and suggests term styles desired by the user, such as upper case characters for acronyms such as DNA, PCR, PAGE, etc. The Symbol Checker will flag unique characters such as Greek words or letters, often preceded or followed by a hyphen, and suggest the corresponding Greek symbol.
And it doesn't stop there. A glossary is included for many of the terms in the custom spelling dictionary (PubMed), which can be conveniently displayed while sciPROOF proofreads documents. Reference information for any term can be searched and displayed instantaneously through PubMed. The list of features goes on. We're finding sciPROOF is one of the best extensions to Microsoft Word we've ever used. We think you will too.

Proofing Tool
"sciPROOF automatically integrates with Word's "as you type" spell-check function to reduce the number of spurious misspelling reports (over 85% in the crystallography, genetics, and cell biology papers tested, excluding references)."
"The online MEDLINE search function, while not designed to replace the NLM interface, is very useful for rapidly performing cursory literature searches with minimal impact on the writing process.
"One of the most appealing aspects of sciPROOF is its ease of use. The program is so intuitive that downloading sciPROOF will probably take longer than understanding it, for users familiar with the Word spell-check interface."

The Proof is in the Spell-Checker
SCISOFT's sciPROOF software offers word processing help to life scientists | By Aileen Constans
"Scientific terms such as "hematopoietic" and "chemokine" are not found in the native spell-check program included with standard word processing software. While it's certainly possible to add each term individually to the dictionary, to do so would be time-consuming and tedious. To solve this problem, Portland, Ore.-based SCISOFT has developed software that significantly streamlines preparation of scientific manuscripts."
"Unique to sciPROOF is a style function that automates standard scientific notation, such as the formatting of genus and species names, and the use of Greek letters, symbols, and acronyms such as DNA and PCR."
