Frequently Asked Questions

General questions

Q: Will a Macintosh version of sciPROOF™ be developed?

A: Yes, we are currently developing sciPROOF for Microsoft Office X and Office 2004 which will run on the Macintosh OS X operating system. If you would like to be contacted when it is available, please contact us at info@sciproof.com with "Macintosh" in the subject line.

The beta version will be available for public testing by early March, 2006. If you are interested in becoming a Macintosh beta tester for sciPROOF, please click here for more information.

Q: Will a Word Perfect version of sciPROOF be developed?

A: Yes, a sciPROOF version for Word Perfect is planned. If you would like to be notified when the Word Perfect version is available, please e-mail us at info@sciproof.com with "Word Perfect" in the subject line.

Q: Is sciPROOF™ compatible with Microsoft Word 97?

A:No, sciPROOF is compatible with Microsoft Office 2000 (Word 2000), Office XP (Word 2002) and Office 2003 (Word 2003).

Q: Does sciPROOF work with other Microsoft Office applications besides Microsoft Word? If so, why are there not any sciPROOF buttons in the toolbars of other Office programs?

A: sciPROOF is fully functional (spell checker, format checker, option configurations, etc.) in Microsoft Word only. However, the sciPROOF spellchecker works with all other Office applications (Outlook, Outlook Express, Power Point, Front Page, Excel, Access, Visio and Microsoft Project) but the sciPROOF spelling suggestions are displayed through the native spell-check interfaces.

Q: Will terms/words that are added to the sciPROOF spell-check database in Microsoft Word be recognized in all other Microsoft Office applications (Power Point, Front Page, Excel, Outlook, Outlook Express, Access, Visio, Microsoft Project, etc)?

A: Yes, since all Microsoft Office applications share the same spellchecking components, including sciPROOF.

Q: I added terms to Microsoft Word custom dictionaries before I installed sciPROOF. Do I need to re-add these terms to sciPROOF?

A: No, sciPROOF and the Microsoft Office spellchecker work together. While spellchecking, terms are evaluated by Word's standard and custom lexicons first and then "passed" to sciPROOF if the term is not recognized.

Q: What languages are supported by sciPROOF™?

A: sciPROOF supports all languages that are configured during the installation of Microsoft Office. For example, if you installed spellchecking support for English, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, etc., then sciPROOF will support all of these languages. To install/configure spellchecking components for a particular language, please start the installation of Microsoft Office. Next, go to the "Components" page and then to "Proofing Tools" from the "Office Shared Features"section and select the language(s) to support.

Please note that all scientific terms in the sciPROOF database are in English (US). However, you can add terms in any language that are configured in Office.

Q: Why is sciPROOF not available on CD?

A: We often release software updates that include new features, technical improvements, etc. By providing sciPROOF in digital format only, our customers are guaranteed that they purchase the latest version of sciPROOF.
